Jessica Simpson "So Shocked" by Eric Johnson's Proposal

Jessica Simpson "So Shocked" by Eric Johnson's Proposal

When it comes to her love life, Jessica Simpson isn't shy -- especially when she has happy news to share. So, of course, she's opening up about her new husband-to-be (whom she calls the "best man in her life") and describing the moment when Eric Johnson popped the question on Nov. 11, after only six months of dating.

"I actually had to sit on his knee I was so shocked," Simpson, 30, said on CBS's The Early Show Monday.

The singer, who has a new Christmas album out, says that her beau had been planning the proposal for a long time and had gone the traditional route by asking her parents for her hand.

Though he may have followed tradition by getting her dad's approval, Johnson stepped out of the box when choosing the three-stone ruby stunner that Simpson is sporting on her left hand.

"I've already done the traditional thing so I just wanted to do something that was different," Simpson said, referring to her previous diamond engagement ring from ex-husband Nick Lachey. "It was all Eric's idea, and he just wanted it to be special."

And special it was. After Johnson proposed, a surprised Simpson said it took her a bit to absorb what was happening.

"I said yes, and we both definitely were teary-eyed. I didn't even try the ring on until like, five minutes in," she said with a laugh. "I was so shocked, just kind of sat there and cried with him."

So, he's cute and gentlemanly and has great taste in jewelry -- but what's the main quality that makes Simpson so sure she wants to spend the rest of her life with Johnson?

"The best thing about Eric is that he's just really thoughtful and he keeps me very centered," she said. "And always makes me feel like my feet are on the ground and is probably the most special part of my life."
