Glee, Modern Family, The Kids Are All Right and Burlesque are just a few nominees for GLAAD’s 22nd Annual Media Awards. The awards honor movies, TV, music and theater for their outstanding portrayals of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered people.
Wide release film nominees include The Kids Are All Right, Scott Pilgrim vs. The World, The Girl Who Played with Fire, Easy A and Burlesque, starring Christina Aguilera and Cher.
GLAAD also recognizes lesser known movies with its limited release category. These nominees include James Franco’s indie film Howl (where the actor plays a gay poet who adopts a 15-year-old child) and La Mission, a film about a father coming to terms with his son’s homosexuality. Jim Carrey and Ewan McGregor’s prison romance I Love You Phillip Morris is also nominated. Carrey described his scenes kissing McGregor as "a dream come true", although he joked that kissing another guy "can get a little prickly."
Glee and Modern Family are both up for outstanding comedy series. Glee’s Chris Colfer, who plays a frequently teased, gay high school student, recently dedicated his Golden Globe win to the victims of bullying.
GLAAD’s President Jarrett Barrios said the organization is "proud to recognize this year’s nominees" and challenged the industry "to share more stories that reflect the diversity of (the LGBT community) and the challenges that gay and transgendered people face."
