'Star' Magazine Apologizes to Katie Holmes for Drug Headline

'Star' Magazine Apologizes to Katie Holmes for Drug Headline

Katie Holmes has settled her lawsuit with Star magazine over a cover story that suggested she was addicted to drugs. We don't know the monetary terms of the settlement (probably not as much as these extravagant celebrity weddings cost), but Star will be issuing an apology in its May 9 issue (and on the cover!), according to EW.com. Here's what the celeb gossip magazine has to say about its story:

"In a recent issue of Star, we published headlines about Katie Holmes that could be read to suggest that she was addicted to drugs. Star did not intend to suggest that Ms. Holmes was a drug addict or was undergoing treatment for a drug addiction. Star apologizes to Ms. Holmes for any misperception and will be making a substantial donation to charity on Ms. Holmes' behalf for any harm that we may have caused."

This is a big turnaround from the magazine's earlier statement, which announced they would "vigorously defend" their story entitled "Addiction Nightmare: Katie Drug Shocker! The real reason she can't leave Tom." In contrast to the headline, the article didn't actually claim that Holmes was using drugs, but that her use of Scientology's "e-meter" tool was having a drug-like effect on her. (Was that perhaps a little deceptive? Yeah, we think so, too.)

In addition to printing an apology and the confidential money settlement, Star publisher American Media has made a "substantial contribution" to the Dizzy Feet Foundation, the nonprofit charity Holmes co-founded to support dance education for underprivileged young people.

The actress responded to the settlement with tact, saying that she's "pleased that this lawsuit could be resolved amicably" and she's looking forward to "once again focusing my attention on my family and career." Holmes' lawyer was less diplomatic, saying that the story "should never have been published in the first place."

"Her lawsuit should serve as a lesson to other tabloids that if they print false and defamatory stories about Katie, she will stand up for her legal rights," said Holmes' lawyer. In other words, don't mess with Katie -- she's one tough mama
